DIY FLOWER BUCKETS/ DIY WEDDING FLOWERS

If you purchase DIY flower buckets from us then you will need to follow all the steps on our 'Caring for your flowers' blog post before arranging your flowers. Gift bouquet flowers tend to be picked in bud or not fully open so they get the longest vase life. If you are arranging your own flowers for an event then you want them to be at their best stage on the day. It's a fine balancing act trying to get them all to the pefect point for the big day. We recommend the following addtional steps to keep them at their best for your event.

Step 1. Transporting your flowers - When transporting your flowers from collection please make sure that they aren't squashed in transit. Bring blankets or towels or boxes to secure your buckets with space between them so nothing falls over or gets crushed on transit. We also recommend having your air conditioning on in your car. Don't leave the flowers in the car on a sunny day. They won't thank you for it!

Step 2. Resting your flowers - When you unload your flowers we recommend topping up the water in the buckets as we won't have put too much in the buckets for transporting to avoid spilages. Place the buckets of flowers in a cool dark place for a few hours to recover.

Step 3. Conditioning - After they've had a rest and a drink somewhere cool you will need to condition your flowers. We will have prepared them to a certain level but we recommend doing this for extra preparation before arranging. Remove any leaves under the water line. Recut stems at a 45 degree angle. Remove any damaged flowers, petals or stems. We recommend putting into vases or buckets per type of flower as some will prefer different conditions to others. Anything that looks like it is opening too fast put somehwere as cool as possible and preferably dark. Any flowers in tight bud that you need to open up quickly move somehwere warm. Everything else just needs to be out of direct sunlight and somewhere cool but not draughty.

Step 4. Finding a spot to work - When it comes time to arrange make sure you are working somewhere that isn't too hot. Handling the flowers in the heat will make them go over very quickly.

Step 5. Storing before transit to event - When you've finished arranging move them straightaway to a cool dark spot before packing for transporting to the event.

  • Buttonholes - If you make any buttonholes you can leave the stems longer than they need to be and pop them in a small bud vase or jam jar until you're ready to use them. When ready to attach just snip the stems straight across before attaching.

  • Flower Crowns - If you make a flower crown then we recommend keeping it in a tupperware pot with a damp sprayed paper towel and popped in the fridge until you are ready to wear it.

  • Bouquets - Keep bouquet stems long and in a vase of water until the last possible moment then cut the stems straight across.

Step 6. Transporting arrangements - As with the buckets we recommend transporting your flowers in an airconditioned vehicle. Keep arrangements apart by using boxes, towels and blankets or packing materials. When you arrive at the venue move all the flowers into position unless they will be in full sun too far in advance. If you have an arrangment that will be in the sun for the event then make sure it is placed there at the absolute last minute it can be so it looks at its best.
